The Tortosa City Council has moved to settle outstanding debts with the Petjades de l'Ebre animal shelter this March, following public claims that the facility was facing a critical financial crisis.

The organization reported on Monday that unpaid invoices from December and January had left them unable to pay staff wages. They emphasized that only community support had allowed them to continue caring for the animals despite the lack of official funding from the local government.
Mayor Mar Lleixà stated that the January invoice has now been paid, while the December payment remains delayed due to complex year-end administrative procedures. The situation sparked political debate, with Meritxell Roigé from Junts per Tortosa accusing the local government of incompetence and neglect.

"We only ask for what is fair, what is signed and agreed upon; the animals cannot wait and neither can we."
