The Mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, announced this Friday the creation of a Local Assembly for Language, a strategic move to strengthen the social use of Catalan throughout 2026.

This initiative is part of the Local Pact for Language, aiming to integrate newcomers and ensure Catalan remains a tool for social cohesion. The City Council will implement new linguistic requirements in public tenders and subsidies, as well as staff training programs in collaboration with the Consortium for Linguistic Normalization.

"The new department is a clear commitment to the defense and promotion of Catalan as a tool for social cohesion."
