The political group Movem Tortosa welcomed the decision as a milestone for democratic memory. Deputy Mayor Jordi Jordan noted that the change fulfills a long-standing request from Vidiella's family and a commitment by local left-wing parties.
“"It is one more step in the democratic memory of the city."
Rafel Vidiella, a typographer by trade, was the only person from Tortosa to serve as a minister in the Generalitat de Catalunya in modern times. He was a member of the CNT and UGT unions and led the Catalan PSOE before the PSUC was formed in 1936.
During the Spanish Civil War, he held several ministerial posts, including Justice and Labor. After living in exile in Budapest, he returned to Catalonia in 1976. The council highlighted his commitment to labor rights and social equality.
