The center of Tortosa is undergoing a profound renovation with the demolition of the old railway bridge, an action that will conclude in the coming days and open up a new space with green areas and a large provisional car park.
The recovery of the former Renfe lands and the demolition of the old railway bridge, known as the pont Roig, mark the end of a historic architectural barrier that separated the Eixample and Temple neighborhoods. This transformation will create a wide-open space in the heart of the city, including a green area and a second provisional car park with 284 spaces for cars and motorcycles, as well as an access road for emergency vehicles.
The works, which began in December, have involved leveling the surface and clearing the embankment of the old bridge. Currently, the walls of Ronda Reus and Ronda Docs streets are being removed, and the final demolition of the embankment that closed off the space on Avinguda Generalitat is planned. These actions, which have caused traffic disruptions, are expected to be completed by June, after the awarded company, Also Casals, requested a two-month extension due to adverse weather conditions.

"It is necessary to do it this way, and all instructions from the Local Police must be followed during the works."
The mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, has asked for the public's understanding regarding the inconveniences caused, emphasizing the importance of these works for the city's future. Deputy Mayor Jordi Jordan highlighted that the project, with an investment of 400,892 euros, has been modified by the current government team to include a landscaped area and expand the scope of action by more than 10,300 square meters, with the aim of better integrating and reorganizing this new space.

"A clear space will be created in the city center, which will transform Tortosa, uniting, stitching together the Eixample with the Temple, and responding to one of the city's main demands and problems, such as the need for parking, and also green areas, to improve the quality of life of citizens and boost our small and medium-sized businesses."
To ensure vehicle rotation and prevent saturation, the Tortosa City Council plans for the new car parks to be paid, although the exact formula is still being evaluated and will not be 'exactly like the blue zone'. This measure seeks to optimize the use of available spaces and revitalize local commerce.
