The financial contribution will be distributed between 2026 and 2027, with €275,054.06 allocated for 2026 and €68,763.52 for 2027. The archaeological intervention will involve the excavation of approximately 300 square meters, to an average depth of between 3 and 4 meters. It will also include the necessary technical work for the documentation, study, and preservation of any archaeological remains found.
This new excavation follows up on the archaeological surveys conducted in 2024, which confirmed the site's significant heritage value. They identified occupation levels dating from the 10th to the 16th centuries, as well as remains of urban structures potentially linked to the city's former Jewish quarter.
This initiative aims to enhance the knowledge and preservation of the area's archaeological heritage. Furthermore, it will facilitate the assessment of the feasibility of constructing the future Baix Ebre Regional Archive, a strategic cultural infrastructure promoted by the Department of Culture.
