The periodic bad odor episodes affecting some areas of Vacarisses are a constant concern for the municipality. To improve the analysis of this issue and minimize the nuisance, new monitoring and tracking strategies will be implemented.
The Consorci de Residus del Vallès Occidental has announced that the 2027 budget will include the contracting of a new service for monitoring odors related to the facilities of the Coll Cardús landfill, currently in the process of closure, and the Waste Treatment Center (CTR-Vallès). This service will employ technical and scientific tools to identify and quantify emissions, as well as analyze their propagation in the atmosphere. New tools are also planned to facilitate citizen participation in reporting incidents.
In parallel, the Vacarisses City Council continues to work on this matter, building on previous studies conducted by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). The data collected through atmospheric particle sensors did not detect any health risks for the population.
Based on this work, the council is preparing to acquire new sensors, thanks to funding from the Diputació de Barcelona. These devices offer a high capacity for capturing and detecting a wide range of suspended particles in the atmosphere. The objective is to expand the available resources to continue analyzing the origin of the odors, obtain more information to identify potential sources, and help prevent the episodes that still occur.
