The delegate of the Government in Terres de l’Ebre, Joan Castor Gonell, confirmed on Monday that the imminent resumption of works at the Verge de la Cinta Hospital will not affect the new university hospital project in Tortosa.

The confirmation came during the meeting of the Table for the promotion of the new university hospital of Terres de l’Ebre, convened to evaluate the progress made. The future facility, which will cover 84,000 square meters, will be located 1.5 kilometers from the center of Tortosa, adjacent to the C-42 road network, linked to the Mediterranean corridor.

"The expansion of the University Hospital of Tortosa, which will resume in a few days, runs parallel to the medical studies and the procedures for the future new hospital; we are following the planned schedule."

Gonell stressed that, despite the complexity of the procedures, the timeline remains. The next meeting of the Urbanism Commission of Catalonia, scheduled for the first quarter of next year, will address the two urban planning master plans (PDU) necessary for its legal enablement. The functional plan for the future hospital is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
One critical point is the availability of the land in the Sant Llàtzer neighborhood. The Mayor of Tortosa, Jordi Jordan, explained that negotiations continue with the four owners for a purchase agreement, although he did not rule out resorting to expropriation as a last resort if a quick agreement is not reached.

"One way or another, this does not prevent the Generalitat from moving forward with the functional plan, the urban requalification of the space, and taking all necessary steps."

Regarding health planning, the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS) will award the functional plan in the coming weeks, in collaboration with health professionals from Terres de l’Ebre and the involvement of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV). The Platform for a new hospital in Terres de l'Ebre, through its spokesperson Francesc Lahosa, expressed satisfaction but insisted they will continue “monitoring” compliance with the deadlines.
