The proposal, driven by a request from the Rovira i Virgili University (URV), seeks to provide the campus with the necessary spaces to host the Degree in Medicine. The Government of Catalonia has set the 2030-2031 academic year as the start date for this new qualification, with an initial cohort of 50 students.
The urban modification foresees the reclassification of 1,878 square meters of land, currently designated as open spaces, to be used for university facilities. This expansion will be divided into two parts: 1,748 square meters of new surface area and an additional 130 square meters that are already part of the campus. In compensation, a new green area of 1,880 square meters will be created near the Remolins trade fair pavilion.
“"Therefore, we trust that this urban modification to facilitate the expansion of the Terres de l'Ebre Campus of the URV can move forward, and that the implementation of the Medicine degree studies can become a reality within the calendar foreseen by the Generalitat, that is, for the 2030-2031 academic year."
This action will not alter the ownership of the land or diminish public land reserves, but rather strengthen the system of facilities in a strategic location, in continuity with the existing campus. The Terres de l'Ebre Campus is bordered by the Ebro river, Remolins avenue, and Rafael Vidiella Park, and the flood-prone nature of the land has been taken into account in the planning.
The arrival of Medicine studies in Tortosa is considered key and strategic for the Hospital Universitari de Tortosa Verge de la Cinta, for the healthcare system of the territory, and for the future Hospital Universitari de les Terres de l'Ebre.
