Under the slogan Orgull Baix Empordà (Baix Empordà Pride), the initiative brings together proposals from various municipalities in the region, including Santa Cristina d’Aro, Palamós, Palafrugell, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Castell d’Aro, Platja d’Aro and S’Agaró, and Calonge i Sant Antoni. The aim is to promote awareness, visibility, and the defense of LGBTQ+ rights.
According to the counselor for Equality Policies of the Consell Comarcal del Baix Empordà, David Martín, this is a pioneering initiative resulting from coordination between the Regional Council, LGBTQ+ integral care services, and several town councils. The program combines recreational, cultural, and protest activities, including workshops, shows, training sessions, cultural events, parties, and a protest march in Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
Martín highlighted that the initiative aims to strengthen prevention and awareness at a regional level, expanding actions beyond individual care to reach the entire community. The counselor also warned about the emergence of discourse questioning established rights, emphasizing the importance of not taking hard-won rights for granted and cautioning against reactionary narratives.
The regional official acknowledged that situations of discrimination, hate, and violence against LGBTQ+ individuals still occur in the area. Therefore, he stressed the importance of continuing to work on prevention and victim support. Citizens can contact the LGBTQ+ Integral Care Service of the Consell Comarcal or the municipal services in Palafrugell and Sant Feliu de Guíxols for guidance and support.
