The inauguration of the new Council Chamber at the Begur Town Hall took place in June 2001, marking the completion of a comprehensive renovation of the municipal building that began in late 1997. This second phase of works, carried out between autumn 2000 and winter 2001, aimed to modernize the council's facilities.
Improved accessibility was another key aspect of the project, with the installation of an elevator. The new Council Chamber, equipped with an investment of 6.5 million pesetas (approximately 39,000 euros), was designed to better accommodate council meetings and other public events.
The then-mayor, Carles Arnau i Ferrer, highlighted in the editorial of the municipal magazine 'Es Pedrís Llarg' that the new chamber represented a significant milestone in the Town Hall's renovation process. This inauguration coincided with a notable change in how council meetings operated.
From May 29, 2001, attendees at ordinary council meetings were able to ask questions to council members, a measure intended to foster citizen engagement and open plenary sessions to the public. The new chamber was thus conceived as a crucial space for municipal debate and decision-making, enhancing conditions and expanding opportunities for resident participation.
More than two decades later, the Council Chamber inaugurated in 2001 remains a fundamental institutional space in Begur, continuing to host council sessions and other municipal events.
