Several health centers in Baix Empordà, including the Palamós Hospital, have implemented a digital platform to exchange medicines nearing their expiry date and prevent waste.

The project, known as PimCat and promoted by the Consorci Sanitari i Social de Catalunya, aims to optimize the management of pharmaceutical resources. This initiative allows pharmacy services to list drugs they do not expect to use before they expire, making it easier for other centers to request and utilize them.
Annual spending on expired medicines in hospital pharmacy services is estimated at around 4 million euros across the region. This volume not only represents a significant economic loss but also creates a notable environmental impact due to the processes required for their removal and controlled disposal.
Following the signing of the agreement on March 12, participating centers have conducted internal training sessions for healthcare staff. The goal is to improve efficiency in managing expiry alerts and promote a more rational use of available resources.
This measure is part of the sustainability policies of the Departament de Salut, supported by the Direcció General d'Ordenació i Regulació Sanitària and funded by the Fons d'Ús Racional del Medicament. Currently, the system covers 32 health centers throughout Catalunya.
