The Unió de Pagesos union has called on the Department of Territory to immediately resume coypu control measures in Baix Empordà and Alt Empordà following increased crop damage.

The agricultural organization criticizes that no capture actions have been taken since early January 2026. According to the union, the Catalan Government decided not to renew the specific control brigades that operated between 2023 and 2025, citing a lack of budget.
While active, these brigades captured 3,289 specimens until May 2025. The union warns that this invasive species reproduces rapidly, posing a significant threat to herbaceous crops such as rapeseed and rice, which are the rodent's primary food sources.
