A vegetation fire in La Bisbal d'Empordà, which started on Friday midday, has rapidly spread due to strong tramuntana winds, burning 1,200 hectares and forcing 45,000 local residents into confinement.

The fire, which began near the GI-660 road, has entered the protected massif of Les Gavarres and is advancing uncontrollably. The intensity of the flames and smoke columns have led authorities to recommend confinement for residents of a dozen towns, advising them to close doors and windows. Given the situation, the public is urged to cancel travel to the affected area, especially those with second homes.
From the command center, the Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, described the scenario as "complicated" and warned that the fire is "very active." Over 200 firefighters and a dozen aerial units are working to stabilize the blaze, which affects up to a thousand hectares. The priority is to contain the fire's head to protect the urbanized area near the coast and the right flank, which is a concern for Saturday with the arrival of the sea breeze.
The chief inspector of Bombers de Generalitat, David Borrell, admitted that the wind change will significantly complicate firefighting efforts. Rural Agents are investigating the "improper" use of an angle grinder by the roadside as the potential origin of the fire, as the Alfa Plan was at level 3.
The fire has caused the closure of five roads: the C-66 (between Palafrugell and Forallac), the GI-513 (between Cornellà del Terri and Vilademuls), the GI-660 (between La Bisbal and Calonge), the GIV-5132 (between Banyoles and Vilademuls), and the GIV-6612 (between Llagostera and Calonge), totaling approximately 60 kilometers of affected road sections.
The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has requested assistance from the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) due to the complexity of the fire, considered a sixth-generation blaze. Approximately 200 military personnel and 60 UME vehicles are en route to Baix Empordà.
The mayor of Santa Cristina d'Aro, Josep Xifre Deulofeu, confirmed that local police forces have been activated to confine and evacuate urbanizations, warning of the ecological risk if the fire enters Les Gavarres.
