Fishing vessels in Palamós and Roses are testing portable desalination units to evaluate their ability to produce drinking water on board during extended periods at sea.

The compact devices can produce between 25 and 60 liters of fresh water per hour. This technology aims to increase the autonomy of crews who spend weeks or even months navigating, ensuring a reliable water supply.
Part of the European Life Ecoadapt 50 project, the initiative focuses on adapting local economies to climate change. The program is coordinated by the Barcelona Provincial Council with support from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the European Commission.
Officials visited the port of Roses this Monday to inspect the equipment. Beyond water security, the project aims to reduce the use of plastic bottles and improve the overall energy efficiency of the fishing fleet.
