The activity, promoted by the Sublimits diving center, aims to raise public awareness about the problems caused by wet wipes. This type of product, often incorrectly flushed down the toilet, ends up reaching the sea through streams, especially during heavy rain episodes when filtration systems are overwhelmed.
The participants, equipped with diving gear, spread out across various points near the mouth of the local stream. In addition to the wet wipes, which form thick layers of waste on the seabed, other debris such as fishing nets, cans, and large plastic pieces were recovered, all of which affect the environmental quality of the area.
“"There is a carpet of wet wipes here."
The campaign seeks to influence consumption and waste management habits. Organizers reminded the public that, although some packaging claims the products are flushable, they do not degrade properly and end up breaking down into microplastics that enter the marine food chain.
This initiative, which already removed 300 kilos of wet wipes last year, is complemented by educational activities on the beach to explain the real impact of this waste on the Costa Brava ecosystems to beachgoers and curious onlookers.
