The metropolitan area of Barcelona is preparing for an unprecedented transformation with the consolidation of the Granvia Biocluster in L'Hospitalet and the double innovation hub of Porta Diagonal and Campus Clínic in Esplugues. These three projects, requiring an estimated global investment of €2 billion, will not be fully realized until 2035, but they are expected to generate an economic impact exceeding €15 billion in the area.
The first step is the burying (soterrament) of the Granvia de L'Hospitalet, near Bellvitge, linked to the PDU Biopol Granvia (104 hectares). This operation, with an investment of €230 million (€144.7 million for the road coverage), will be executed by the Consorci per a la Reforma de la Granvia i del Samontà. Mayor David Quirós and President Salvador Illa signed the definitive agreement on December 11, guaranteeing an initial investment of €130 million.
“"The arrival of the L3 will mark a before and after for our mobility."
The second pillar is the Consorci Porta Diagonal – Campus Clínic, officially established on January 12, which will manage the ambitious relocation of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. With an estimated investment of €1.7 billion, an integrated Health Campus of 300,000 m² will be created on the border between Barcelona, L'Hospitalet, and Esplugues. This project includes the extension of the metro line L3, with a new station on the campus and another in Esplugues, requiring an additional investment of €500 million.
The overall intervention, combining public and private efforts, is projected to generate nearly 50,000 jobs and a total economic impact of €7 billion, equivalent to 8.5% of Catalonia's GDP. Institutions like the Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge (IDIBELL) and the Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge (HUB) are key partners in strengthening this metropolitan health and research ecosystem.
