The Government of Catalonia announced this Wednesday in Barcelona an amendment to the national immigration regularization project to link Catalan language proficiency with residency permit renewals.

The proposal by Salvador Illa's executive establishes that individuals benefiting from the extraordinary regularization will have one year to begin learning Catalan. This condition would be evaluated when applying for the first renewal of their residency card, according to the Department of Language Policy.

"We want to emphasize that language learning is a real tool for integration."

Francesc Xavier Vila · Minister of Language Policy
The announcement took place during a meeting of the National Pact for Language. Currently, 226 municipalities, including major cities in the Baix Llobregat region such as l'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Sant Boi, have joined the agreement to promote the language.
