The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has reactivated studies for the quadruplication of railway tracks between Castelldefels and El Prat de Llobregat, extending the scope to Sants station.

The initiative, part of the Pla de Rodalies (Commuter Rail Plan), aims to increase infrastructure capacity and improve the reliability of southern corridor rail services. The company Saitec SAU has been awarded the contract and has thirty months to conduct the necessary analyses.
The project will enable dynamic overtaking and could increase the speed of Regional trains on this section. The contract, with a budget of 1.2 million euros, includes the drafting of the informative study for the new quadruple track between Castelldefels and El Prat, evaluating the feasibility of alternatives and defining the technical actions.
Regarding the section between El Prat de Llobregat and Sants station, an analysis of alternatives and necessary technical actions is currently underway.

"It is not good news that what we thought would be a project we would see by 2030 is once again being announced as being in the study phase. It is very serious that projects move so slowly and drag on, as construction is not expected to begin until after 2030."

"The Generalitat could have fought much harder with the ministry when the change in criteria was announced. Instead, they settled."
