Technical reports identified that many trees in the area suffered from stunted growth due to narrow planting spaces. This lack of space led to overcrowded canopies and weakened root systems, particularly affecting the hackberry trees (lledoners). To address this, the city is widening the planting frames to allow for better natural development.
The historic plane trees located in Plaça de la Vila will be preserved despite their fragile condition. During the construction phase, specific measures will be taken to protect their roots and improve soil conditions, although a gradual replacement plan is expected for the future.
Relocation efforts began in February at callejón de l'Església and are currently moving forward in Pi i Margall. A total of 29 trees are being moved to green spaces such as Parc Llorens Sans and Parc Europa, where they will have a better chance of long-term recovery.
A key feature of the redevelopment is the installation of structural soil. This technology increases the volume available for roots without compromising the pavement, improving drainage and aeration to ensure the health of the 11 newly planted trees in the renovated center.
