The event, convened on May 4, 2026 in front of the town hall, brought together various authorities, including the mayor, the Minister of the Presidency, and the president of the Diputació de Barcelona, along with numerous residents. The objective was to express collective rejection of the crime and support for the victim's family.
However, the gathering led to moments of tension. A group of women, who identified themselves as members of the Asian community, requested a meeting with the mayor to demand justice. Subsequently, the presence of individuals with Aliança Catalana insignia and members of Vox provoked shouts of “Out fascists” from other attendees, leading to a scuffle and exchanges of slogans, some of a racist nature.
“"Others work for division and conflict."
After the moment of silence, the mayor confirmed the hypothesis, already put forward by the Minister of Interior, that the perpetrator of the crime might be suffering from a “mental breakdown,” thus refuting speculations about a possible jihadist motive. The mayor emphasized that the concentration also served to reject “messages of hate” and highlighted the town hall's commitment to “cohesion” in a city he considers “peaceful.”
“"People who commit crimes must know that the full weight of the law will fall upon them."
For his part, the Minister of the Presidency expressed the government's condolences and solidarity with the victim and her family, and thanked the Mossos d'Esquadra for their work. He recalled that the government is working to deploy more agents and judicial units to combat crime and violence, and to preserve coexistence and social cohesion.
