The president of the Generalitat has publicly defended his chief of staff, who is under investigation for alleged irregularities, stating that he knew about the case for weeks and denying any attempt to conceal information.

The president of the Generalitat has come out in defense of his chief of staff, who is currently under investigation for alleged irregularities during his tenure as mayor of Esparreguera. The leader of the Catalan Government revealed that he had been aware of the judicial proceedings for "a few weeks" and emphasized the transparency with which, he claims, actions have been taken from the outset.

"I maintain my trust in him."

In his first public reaction, the president rallied behind his collaborator, calling for respect for the ongoing investigation and the presumption of innocence. In a radio interview, he denied that his executive had attempted to hide information about the investigation, which became known in January.

"We have explained everything there is."

The president insisted that the most relevant aspect is his chief of staff's willingness to collaborate "absolutely" with justice to clarify the facts "as quickly as possible." He added that his collaborator assured him that he had acted "at all times in accordance with the laws" and that he himself had informed the president of the investigation. The Mossos d'Esquadra had seized the chief of staff's mobile phone on January 15 by order of the court number 7 of Martorell.
The judicial procedure dates back to the chief of staff's time leading the Esparreguera City Council, focusing on agreements signed with the Foundation for Labor Inclusion (FIL). In early 2025, an operation had already been carried out, including searches and arrests related to the foundation.
The investigation has generated political tensions, with the opposition demanding explanations from the Catalan Government for keeping the chief of staff in a position of utmost trust. However, parliamentary partners have shown a less belligerent stance, calling for respect for the presumption of innocence.

"The criterion I apply is very clear: very strict standards regarding ethical behavior, but also justice. He is doing what he has to do, which is to collaborate. I don't have to make any decision; on the contrary, we must wait to see how this is resolved."

The president sought to differentiate this case from other corruption episodes that have affected his political sphere, where, he recalled, action was taken "forcefully and promptly" when clear evidence existed. He expressed his conviction that the case will be resolved "satisfactorily" for his chief of staff, whom he described as someone he knows well.
