Studies conducted by arboriculture specialists, municipal technical services, and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) have identified problems with the root system development of some of the 104 hackberry trees analyzed, which could compromise their stability. The AMB report recommends acting as soon as possible on specimens with the most significant issues.
The intervention will be carried out progressively, tree by tree, and will include the expansion of tree pits to improve root growth conditions. The objective is to ensure public safety and preserve the environmental and landscape quality of the street.
A total of 37 trees will be progressively removed, and simultaneously, the tree pits will be enlarged. Once this phase is complete, the stumps will be removed, and the ground prepared for planting new specimens during this winter. The hackberry (Celtis australis) will largely be maintained, combined with Koelreuteria paniculata in areas where smaller trees are advisable due to proximity to facades or balconies. The project will conclude with the planting of shrubs and perennial plants in the tree pits and the installation of rope barriers.
The City Council will provide information on any potential temporary disruptions to public spaces resulting from the tree replacement tasks.
