Chronic failure of Calafell elevator forces acceleration of accessibility works

The breakdown caused by a broken pulley will keep the access equipment to Passeig de la Unió inactive for days, affecting reduced mobility.

The elevator providing access under the railway track to Passeig de la Unió in Calafell has once again become inoperative due to a chronic breakdown, forcing the City Council to prioritize the construction of a new accessible ramp starting next September.

This new incident at the elevator on Sant Pere street, which allows people to bypass the stairs to reach the municipal market, is due to a broken pulley, and its repair will take several days. Breakdowns are common at this location, and on more than one occasion, the Firefighters have had to rescue trapped individuals.
To solve the accessibility issues, the City Council has already tendered the works to build a new step-free ramp next to the elevator. This new structure will comply with regulations, featuring a 10% slope, improving the current 8% which did not meet legal requirements.

"The elevator will be maintained for those who wish to avoid using the new ramp, which, as he points out, will only have 2% less slope."

Ramon Ferré · Mayor of Calafell
These works are part of a broader urban renewal project covering the streets between Carrerada d’en Ralet and Sant Pere street, from the railway line to the promenade. The total budget is 7.8 million euros and aims to improve 17,000 m2 with wider sidewalks, new lighting, service renewal, and measures to minimize flooding on rainy days.
