The El Vendrell City Council has advanced the expansion project for the Baix Penedès Regional Archive by constructing a new adjacent building. This action will double the facility's built area, increasing it from the current 614 m² to a total of 1,145 m².
The new infrastructure will significantly increase document preservation capacity. The current deposits, totaling 2,635 linear meters, will be extended by an additional 2,680 linear meters, reaching a total of 5,315.63 linear meters. This will ensure the preservation of the documentary heritage of the Baix Penedès for decades to come and address the continuous increase in documentation received by the archive.
In addition to the new deposits, the project includes specific areas for document processing and classification, fund digitization, workspaces, consultation rooms, and other support spaces. These improvements aim to optimize document preservation conditions and enhance services for both researchers and the general public.
The construction is taking place on the site formerly occupied by a youth organization's headquarters. The project is supported by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which has granted the City Council a subsidy of 116,000 euros for the basic project's drafting. The new architecture integrates with the existing building and adheres to criteria of functionality, sustainability, and energy efficiency, evoking the architectural identity of El Vendrell.
