Storm destroys Badalona and Montgat beaches and breaks Llevant collector pipe

The severe easterly storm, comparable to the Gloria storm of 2020, generated six-meter waves and massive sand loss on the northern coastline.

The storm caused severe damage to the beaches of Badalona and Montgat, resulting in massive sand loss and the breakage of the Llevant collector, requiring the installation of an emergency bypass.

The category one easterly storm, comparable to the Gloria storm of January 2020, generated waves up to six meters high, severely impacting the northern metropolitan coastline. The main damages are concentrated in the municipalities of Badalona and Montgat.
In Badalona, beaches such as Barca Maria and Cristall have lost almost all their sand. Furthermore, at least five shower platforms and walkways were severely damaged, along with benches and bins displaced by the force of the water.

The force of the storm caused a rupture of the Llevant collector pipe at the northern end of Badalona, which transports wastewater from this municipality and part of Tiana.

The rupture of the Llevant Collector, which carries wastewater to the Besòs treatment plant, was immediately addressed by the AMB and Aigües de Barcelona. An emergency bypass was installed, active since 7 PM yesterday, which has prevented sewage spills into the sea and avoided affecting the drinking water supply.
AMB technicians are assessing the sand loss in Montgat and the need for emergency replenishment. The metropolitan body emphasizes the importance of implementing long-term structural actions to stabilize the beaches given the increased frequency and intensity of storms associated with climate change.
