The AMB Metropolitan Council approved on December 16 an investment of 43.1 million euros from Aigües de Barcelona for the water network serving Barcelona and 22 surrounding cities in 2026.

The budget, which will be covered by the company Aigües de Barcelona, was approved by the Metropolitan Council on December 16 with abstentions from PP and Junts per Tiana, and the sole vote against coming from Vox. These 43.1 million euros are designated for ordinary maintenance and improvement expenses in the municipalities where the company currently operates.
The main allocations of this investment include distribution (25.7 million), transport (10.4 million), information systems (4.4 million), and supply buildings (one million). Additionally, these funds are supplemented by an extra 16.3 million euros related to investments in the Ter-Llobregat area, which are processed by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA).
These investments are separate from the new tender that the AMB is preparing to launch for the water concession in eight additional municipalities. This new concession, valued at 800 million euros over 25 years, will require initial investments of 170 million in towns such as Sant Cugat del Vallès, Cervelló, Corbera de Llobregat, La Palma de Cervelló, Tiana, Sant Andreu de la Barca, Molins de Rei, and Ripollet.
This economic injection is crucial for cities burdened by contracts that expired years ago and are currently in an exceptional transitional situation. For instance, Corbera de Llobregat is currently on its seventh contractual extension of an agreement originally signed with Sociedad General de Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar) back in 1989.
