Barcelona Hosts Extensive Exhibition Program for 2026

The Catalan capital offers a varied cultural agenda including art, photography, cinema, and reflections on time and history.

The city of Barcelona is gearing up for a culturally rich year in 2026, with an extensive exhibition program ranging from auteur cinema to contemporary art and local history.

Among the highlighted proposals, the Virreina Centre de la Imatge is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, a pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague. This display, available until October 4, includes a wide selection of his films, unreleased materials, work notebooks, personal photographs, and unrealized projects.
CaixaForum presents “Chez Matisse. The Legacy of a New Painting”, an exhibition exploring the trajectory and influence of French painter Henri Matisse on the avant-garde movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition, open until August 16, highlights the artistic dialogue surrounding his work, from his early self-portraits to his final creations using the gouache technique.
The MACBA concludes the exhibition “Projecting a Black Planet. The Art and Culture of Pan-Africa” on April 19, a collection of 350 pieces by one hundred artists from 80 countries documenting a century of Pan-Africanism and the struggle against colonialism and racism.
Other notable exhibitions include “One Hundred Years of Lights and Dreams. Cines Verdi 1926-2026” at the Biblioteca Jaume Fuster, celebrating the centenary of the Verdi Cinemas in Gràcia until May 23, and “The Invention of Time” at the Centre Martorell d’Exposicions, inviting reflection on time until July 30, 2026.
The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) presents “Recovered from the Enemy. The Francoist Deposits at the MNAC” until June 28, while the Fundació Joan Miró hosts “Espai 13 Sala 14 Cripta” from April 22 to July 5, 2026. The Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez pays tribute to Francisco Ibáñez with a diorama based on his self-portrait.
Additionally, the CCCB offers “Rodoreda, a Forest” until May 25, a journey through the work of Mercè Rodoreda featuring 400 works by other authors. The Sala Univers at CosmoCaixa is a new permanent exhibition on the origin of matter and the evolution of life.
