The railway infrastructure administrator, Adif, confirmed that the high-speed journey between Barcelona and Madrid will be extended by 25 minutes until December to improve track maintenance.

This measure, which has been in effect since this Thursday, was agreed upon with the operators Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo. The decision means that the fastest journey between the two capitals will now exceed three hours, and the companies are already informing passengers of schedule changes and potential cancellations.
The service slowdown follows complaints from train drivers regarding track irregularities, which necessitated the implementation of temporary speed limits at certain points. Previously, since this Monday, the three operators had already been forced to cancel the last trains of the day at the request of Adif to carry out maintenance work during nighttime hours.

Following the delays and cancellations, air companies have reinforced the air shuttle service and capped ticket prices.

In response to the rail problems, the airline Iberia announced a price cap on air shuttle tickets between Barcelona and Madrid in economy class, setting a maximum of 99 euros per trip. This measure is valid until February 19.
Furthermore, Vueling will temporarily reinstate the Barcelona-Madrid route with two daily flights (one on weekends) starting February 9 and running until February 22. These flights will also have a limited basic fare price of 99 euros to strengthen mobility between the two cities.
