The courtyards of 86 educational facilities in Barcelona will open outside of school hours to become public neighborhood spaces, offering activities and play to citizens on Friday afternoons and weekends.

Starting today, the courtyards of 86 educational facilities in the city, including municipal nurseries, infant and primary schools, and secondary schools, will be open outside of school hours to become local public spaces. This initiative extends to all districts of Barcelona.
Opening hours vary by center: 66 schools, secondary schools, and institutes will open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with morning or afternoon schedules, aimed at children, adolescents, families, and the general public. Additionally, the library of Escola Mercè Rodoreda also joins the initiative on Saturdays from 11 AM to 2 PM.
The 20 municipal nurseries participating will be open on Saturdays from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM, specifically for families with children aged 0 to 6 years. These spaces offer play elements such as sandboxes and motor skill areas, as well as early childhood stories, in collaboration with Biblioteques de Barcelona.
The municipal program Open Schoolyards, promoted by the Barcelona City Council in collaboration with the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona (CEB) and the districts, aims to optimize the use of school centers to enhance their educational and social aspects, providing a safe and local environment for collective activities outside of school hours.
Each schoolyard will have a monitoring service for opening, closing, and ensuring the proper use of facilities, fostering interaction among children and young people.
The service at municipal nurseries will begin on October 3rd and will run until May 27th, 2027, with exceptions on December 26th, 2026, and January 2nd, 2027. On November 7th, an itinerant storytelling cycle will commence.
