Regarding mortality, an estimated 1,069 deaths from breast cancer in women were recorded in Catalonia in 2025. Trends in incidence and mortality rates show stabilization over the last ten years, with the increase in cases being proportional to population growth.
The Department of Health reminds that early detection of breast cancer allows for identifying the disease in its initial stages, when it may not yet present symptoms, thus favoring more effective treatment. The Early Detection Program invites women aged 50 to 69 to undergo a mammogram every two years. According to the latest consolidated data, 475,406 women were invited in 2024, of whom 282,404 (59.4%) had a mammogram. In 16,179 cases (5.7%), further diagnostic studies were necessary, leading to the detection of 1,427 breast cancers.
The health regions of Barcelona Nord (1,481 cases), Barcelona Ciutat (1,244), and Barcelona Sud (816) account for 63% of estimated breast cancer cases in Catalonia. The remaining cases are distributed among Girona (636), Camp de Tarragona (383), Penedès (332), Catalunya Central (304), Lleida (259), Terres de l’Ebre (124), and Alt Pirineu i Aran (51).
The Department of Health also emphasizes the importance of maintaining healthy habits to help reduce cancer risk, such as not smoking, following a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and practicing breastfeeding.
