One year ahead of the union elections scheduled for 2027, CCOO held an event under the slogan “Wages, Roof, and Rights” with the aim of strengthening its position as the leading union in Catalonia. The general secretary of CCOO of Catalonia, Belén López, emphasized the need to send clear messages to employers' associations, political parties, and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
One of the union's main demands is an increase in wages to offset the loss of purchasing power. Unai Sordo, general secretary of the CCOO Confederation, highlighted the paradox of high employment with stagnant wages, which do not cover living costs. This situation, linked to the war in the Middle East, has led to a request for an observatory from the Generalitat to monitor price increases.
“"We will not pay for this war again."
Sordo proposed a wage increase of between 4% and 7% in collective agreements and criticized tax reductions that benefit high incomes. In this regard, CCOO suggests a negative income tax that could transfer up to 300 euros to families to help them cover expenses. He also warned about privatization and its political motivation.
The housing crisis, with a 12% price increase in the last year, was another central point. Sordo called for action against speculation and tourist flats. He also positively assessed the recent extraordinary regulation of immigrants, considering it a “magnificent piece of news” that will reduce workers' vulnerability, and debunked rumors about the impact of the immigration strike on this process.
The assembly also featured international figures such as Valentina Cappeletti from CGIL of Lombardy and Serge Ragazzacci from CGT of Occitania, as well as a delegation from the Workers' Party of Brazil. All of them highlighted the role of unions in the fight against the far-right and in defending peace, justice, and equality.
Finally, López referred to the Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM), a platform promoted by Pedro Sánchez and Stefan Löfven that seeks to coordinate progressive forces. Sordo will participate in the inaugural session of this event, which begins tomorrow in Barcelona, along with other union leaders such as Pepe Álvarez from UGT. The event will feature prominent international personalities such as Pedro Sánchez, Lula Da Silva, Gustavo Petro, António Costa, and Teresa Ribera.
