The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has created a new division and technical teams to reinforce the preventive maintenance of the R1, R2, R4 lines and the Barcelona tunnels, addressing the complexity of the network.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has announced the creation of a new division to reinforce the “preventive” maintenance of the Rodalies network in Catalonia. This initiative will focus exclusively on the main lines, the R1, the R2, and the R4, as well as the Barcelona tunnels.
According to the ministry, these measures, announced in a statement this Wednesday, respond to the need to address the “complexity” of the conventional Catalan train network and the increasing impact of climate change on the railway infrastructure. This decision comes one day after the announcement of the permanent relocation to Barcelona of the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, until the Rodalies crisis is resolved.

"It will allow the network to fully recover normality in a matter of days, in some cases, and weeks in others."

The new Preventive Maintenance Division will assume the organization of the necessary tasks to “anticipate possible incidents on the network” and will be staffed with a greater number of specialized technicians. This unit will depend on Adif’s Maintenance Sub-directorate, which will now have jurisdiction over the entire Catalan railway network.
In parallel, the central executive will activate technical operational teams that will be responsible “exclusively” for the main lines. Furthermore, a public employment offer of 30 positions has been announced to reinforce operational staff in Catalonia.
