The Department of Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition has invested 4.92 million euros from the Climate Fund in various initiatives to strengthen and expand intercity bus services. These investments are part of policies aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and reducing private transport emissions.
The Minister of Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, emphasized that "the fight against climate change requires us to continue strengthening public transport and making it better and more practical for citizens every day." She added that these investments allow for "expanding connections, increasing services, and improving mobility opportunities throughout the territory."
The fund's resources have enabled 49 initiatives across bus services in various regions of Catalonia, with improvements progressively rolled out throughout 2025 and the early months of 2026.
The Climate Fund, financed by the tax on CO2 emissions from vehicles and a portion of the revenue from taxes on installations affecting the environment, drives policies for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Minister Paneque highlighted that "green taxation has a direct and tangible return for citizens," contributing to the funding of more efficient and sustainable mobility services.
The funded initiatives have focused on enhancing connectivity in high-demand corridors, improving access to educational centers, strengthening connections between municipalities, and expanding public transport alternatives to private vehicles, including new services and express connections.
The metropolitan area of Barcelona accounts for a significant portion of the improvements, with actions on lines such as the E17 Vallirana-Barcelona, the E4 Barcelona-Ripollet, and connections to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB).
Services have also been reinforced in rural areas and regions with lower population density, such as Terra Alta, Pallars Jussà, Alta Ribagorça, Terres de l'Ebre, Alt Empordà, and the Girona counties, ensuring territorial cohesion and equitable access to services.
Services consolidated during the early months of 2026 include the connections Gavà-Olesa de Bonesvalls, Sentmenat-Barcelona, and Sant Gregori-Girona.
