The internal vote is scheduled for February 27. Alamany, who was the number two on Ernest Maragall's list in the 2019 and 2023 elections, communicated her decision to members via a letter, stating that the time has come to "put Esquerra where it belongs, which is leading Barcelona."
“"Barcelona needs to rehabilitate housing; otherwise, investment funds will do it."
This step, although a formal procedure, is highly relevant, as it is the first time the current councilor has aspired to head the list. Her main challenge will be to redirect the party's course after falling to fourth place in 2023, contrasting sharply with the victory in votes achieved in 2019.
Meanwhile, ERC's critical sectors are intensely debating whether to present an alternative candidacy before the deadline expires on January 24. Names considered include former minister Alfred Bosch, former deputy Oriol Amorós, and councilor Rosa Suriñach, although the latter two have reportedly declined the possibility.
Republicans remain optimistic, appealing to Alamany's experience and the potential wear and tear of Socialist mayor Jaume Collboni. Furthermore, both Comuns and Junts will have to present new lead candidates, as neither Ada Colau nor Xavier Trias will repeat in the contest.
