The decision by Brussels is crucial for the Catalan livestock sector, as it excludes the main pig production areas, such as Osona, Lluçanès, and Segrià, from the control perimeter. This exemption prevents a direct impact on exports and the food chain, which is largely concentrated in these counties.
The limitations are concentrated in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and affect municipalities in eight counties: Vallès Occidental, Vallès Oriental, Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès, Maresme, Alt Penedès, Anoia, and Bages. The provinces of Lleida, Girona, and Tarragona remain completely outside the special measures against ASF.
Within the restricted area, twelve municipalities located less than six kilometers from the initial outbreak, detected in Cerdanyola del Vallès, maintain total confinement of the natural environment until 2026. Access to forests and green areas remains prohibited in this “zero zone” to prevent the movement of wild boars.
In the second protection ring (between 6 and 20 kilometers), restrictions have been eased, allowing residents to return to the forest individually for walking or cycling, although group activities remain banned. The Agents Rurals (Rural Agents) have begun capturing wild boars in this second corona, sealing 54 accesses and identifying 32 common wildlife crossings to ensure containment.
