The Generalitat, the city councils of Barcelona, L'Hospitalet, and Esplugues, along with the UB, formalized the consortium for the new Clínic Campus on the Diagonal, involving a 1.7 billion euro investment.

The urban operation, which anticipates the new Hospital Clínic becoming operational in 2035, aims to create a new 70-hectare neighborhood on Barcelona's Diagonal. This initiative, piloted by a consortium formalized last Monday, entails a global investment of 1.7 billion euros over the next decade.

"It is a clear message in favor of public health, of great magnitude and at the service of all citizens."

Salvador Illa · President of the Generalitat
Among the consortium's first agreements is the acquisition of nearly 300,000 m² of land where the future campus will be built, including the new Faculty of Pharmacy of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). The Generalitat will agree to purchase these plots, currently used as sports facilities by the university, for 135 million euros.
The director of the Hospital Clínic, Josep Maria Campistol, emphasized that healthcare and university training will adapt to challenges linked to technology and artificial intelligence. The project will affect three municipalities (Barcelona, Esplugues, and L'Hospitalet), without abandoning the L'Exemple district.

"To position Barcelona among the main biomedical hubs in Europe and the world."

Joan Guàrdia · Rector of the University of Barcelona (UB)
The start of key infrastructure works, including the extension of Metro Line 3 and the surrounding urbanization, is scheduled for the second half of 2028. The launch of the international architecture competition was brought forward six months to coincide with Barcelona's designation by UNESCO as the world capital of architecture.
