The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, and the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, signed the creation of the joint company Rodalies de Catalunya SME SA in Barcelona this Monday, marking the start of Catalan management of the commuter service during a year of intense infrastructure works.

This commercial company, with a share capital of two million euros and headquarters in Barcelona, will be 50.1% owned by Renfe and 49.9% by the Generalitat. The main goal is for Rodalies de Catalunya to become the future operator managing the commuter lines, aiming to improve a service plagued by daily breakdowns and incidents.
Despite the change in train management, the railway infrastructure (the tracks) will remain the property of Adif, a public entity under the Ministry of Transport. Consequently, Adif continues to set the schedule for network improvement works, meaning 2026 will be characterized by continuous disruptions and service cuts.

"We have a lot of room for improvement and we believe that with our investment commitment, users will see them very soon."

Luis Pedro Marco · President of Adif
Among the most significant disruptions is the closure of the R3 line (connecting L'Hospitalet de Llobregat with Puigcerdà) between L'Hospitalet and La Garriga, an unprecedented interruption expected to last until late 2027. This work aims to double the tracks between Parets del Vallès and La Garriga, a single-track section that limits capacity and causes bottlenecks.
In addition to the R3 works, major projects at key stations are ongoing. The renovation of Sants station, Barcelona's most iconic terminal, will continue throughout 2026 and is not expected to finish until 2028 at the earliest. Likewise, the construction of the future La Sagrera station, scheduled for inauguration in 2031, will maintain an intense pace of work this year.
Other crucial projects continuing in 2026 include the undergrounding of the R2 line through Montcada i Reixac, which has faced delays after cracks appeared in nearby homes, and the final stages of undergrounding in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, where the surface tracks are set to be dismantled after decades of use.
