With 500 days remaining until the 2027 municipal elections, Junts per Catalunya still lacks a lead candidate in Barcelona, as the leadership attempts to avoid primaries between Jordi Martí and Josep Rius.

"We wish we could present Xavier Trias again."

The post-convergent party, which won the 2023 elections led by former mayor Xavier Trias, has two main names on the table: Jordi Martí, president of the municipal group and supported by Trias, and Josep Rius, vice president and spokesperson for JxCat, endorsed by Carles Puigdemont.
In an effort to circumvent an internal struggle, the leadership has sought an alternative consensus candidate. Former president Artur Mas and former minister Quim Forn were sounded out but declined the offer. Businessman Tatxo Benet, who is close to the political space, also rejected the proposal to head the JxCat list in the Catalan capital.
Although Rius would likely have official party backing in case of primaries, Martí remains determined to run if a heavyweight candidate does not emerge. Other names, such as economist Xavier Sala i Martín, Jaume Guardiola, and even Glòria Freixa and Elena Fort, could surface if the internal vote is opened, as the party is exploring all avenues to avoid an internal war.
This uncertainty persists despite the party having set several deadlines to resolve the issue. Former minister Jaume Giró, a critic of the leadership, recently confirmed he would not participate in primaries without the apparatus's support, recalling the precedent of Neus Munté, who won primaries in 2018 but was ultimately not the candidate.
