The internal elections held this Friday have consolidated the position of factions aligned with the party's national leadership in the Catalan capital. Ricard Farin's slate obtained 393 ballots, surpassing the critical candidacy of Rosa Suriñach, who received 236 votes, representing 36.1% of the total. Additionally, 25 blank votes were cast.
Participation in these primaries was 72% of the membership, a figure identical to that recorded a year ago, when the critics achieved victory by a narrow margin of 14 votes. That leadership, headed by Creu Camacho, experienced an internal crisis a few months ago with the resignation of more than half of its executive due to disagreements with the adopted direction.
The victory of the officialist candidacy represents a change of course for the Barcelona federation, which historically had maintained a position of counter-power against the national leadership. One of the main arguments of Farin's candidacy was the need to move past internal disputes and focus on the party's usefulness for the city.
Although the national leadership did not explicitly support either candidacy, the preference for Farin's slate was an open secret. This victory closes one of the critical fronts that the party's leadership had open in the territory. With municipal elections a year away, the Barcelona federation will align with the mayoral candidate, Elisenda Alamany, chosen a few months ago.
