Under the slogan “Bringing the finish line closer”, the race organized by ACANPAN, AESPANC, and AEG aims to raise awareness about the importance of streamlining the evaluation and funding processes for innovative treatments, thereby ensuring equitable access for all patients. Dr. Josep Tabernero, Head of Medical Oncology at Vall d’Hebron Hospital and Director of VHIO, emphasizes that initiatives like this “are highly valuable as they mobilize resources for research, raise disease awareness, and remind us that advancing against pancreatic cancer is a collective effort”.
The Barcelona race is supported by prominent medical professionals, including Dr. Teresa Macarulla, Head of Medical Oncology at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, and Dr. Pilar Navarro, a scientific researcher at the Hospital del Mar. In addition to the event in Barcelona, six other cities across Spain will host similar races between November and December, with a virtual option also available.
All proceeds will go directly to the Carmen Delgado and Miguel Pérez-Mateo research scholarships, which fund projects on new prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for pancreatic cancer. In previous editions, the Race has raised nearly one and a half million euros, funding 20 scientific projects. In 2023, a scholarship was awarded to the Clinical Biochemistry group at the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR).
Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in Spain, with a five-year survival rate of only 10%. It is projected that 10,400 new cases will be diagnosed in the country this year, with over 80% of cases detected in advanced stages.
To participate in the race, registration is required through the official website. Donations can also be made via the 'Fila 0' (Row 0).
