More than a hundred primary and secondary school students from various educational centers in Catalonia participated today in the event «50 years of the 1976 democratic struggles. Remembering the past to build a better future», held at the Born–Museum of History of Barcelona.

The event, organized by the Memorial Democràtic with the collaboration of the Department of Education and Professional Training, aimed to bring to younger generations the memory of the citizen mobilizations that contributed to conquering democratic freedoms and recovering Catalonia's self-government during the final years of Francoism. The initiative is part of the official commemoration of the 50th anniversary of these events.
The Minister of Justice and Democratic Quality, Ramon Espadaler, and the Director General of Curriculum and Professional Development, Sònia Fernández, participated in the event, hosted by actress Míriam Escurriola. Espadaler advocated for the role of individuals and social movements in the fight for democracy, emphasizing the importance of passing this legacy to new generations to preserve it.
For her part, Sònia Fernández highlighted the educational potential of the initiative, stating that "democratic memory reminds us that democracy is not inherited: it is learned and practiced every day, and school is where it begins." The students were the protagonists of the day, combining the screening of audiovisual pieces from the Memorial Democràtic with text readings.
Participating schools, such as Escola Sant Marc de Calldetenes, Institut Escola Àngela Bransuela de Mataró, and Institut Lluís de Peguera de Manresa, had previously worked on the content in their classrooms. The audiovisual pieces recalled key episodes such as the March for Freedom, the mobilizations of the labor movement, the Assemblea de Catalunya, the Nova Cançó, the National Day of 1976 in Sant Boi de Llobregat, and the process leading to the 1977 elections.
1976 was a key year due to intense political and social mobilization for democratization in Catalonia, with political, trade union, social, and national demands to end the dictatorship. The Assemblea de Catalunya was an important reference point, with the slogan «Freedom, amnesty, and Statute of Autonomy».
