On June 1st, 50 years passed since the start of the sit-in by women workers of Motor Ibérica. For 28 days, a group of 300 women occupied the parish of Sant Andreu de Palomar to protest against the layoffs and wage reductions affecting their husbands, employees of the automotive company located in Poblenou.
To commemorate this feat, a tribute event was held, attended by some of the protagonists, such as Maruja Ruiz, and photographer Pilar Aymerich, who documented some of the most emblematic moments of those days.
The commemoration took place in the Sala Gòtica of the rectory of the Sant Andreu de Palomar parish, adjacent to the church where the sit-in occurred. The event was made possible by the collaboration of the parish's rector and vicar, Josep Camps and Ignasi Pujades, who were committed to the union struggles of that time.
Historian Pau Vinyes and lawyer and former deputy Magda Oranich provided context for the protest, explaining its relevance and significance.
The tribute recalled key moments of the 28-day sit-in, such as the organization of committees for cleaning, cooking, and childcare, as children also stayed with their mothers. The harshness of the police eviction from the parish, where women peacefully demanded the reinstatement of their husbands, was also remembered.
Maruja Ruiz highlighted that, despite not achieving the immediate objective, the sit-in served as an impetus for the women's demanding and combative stance in defense of social and labor rights, a spirit that had previously remained dormant.
