The contract, covering the period 2026-2028, includes the preventive maintenance and repair of approximately 39,772 traffic lights spread across 1,805 intersections, as well as information panels, access control bollards, and cameras. The aim is to ensure the full functionality and maximum availability of these key systems for the city's mobility and road safety.
The installations covered by the contract also include 1,610 intersections with traffic lights for visually impaired individuals, 1,660 centralized intersections, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, supports, measurement points, 67 anti-terrorism bollards, and 47 information panels. The tender has been structured into two lots, corresponding to the Besòs and Llobregat zones.
This new contract represents an annual budget increase of over 2.5 million euros compared to the current one. Among the new features, it includes updating the inventory, replacing obsolete material, and maintaining new anti-terrorism bollards. Preventive maintenance is reinforced to avoid equipment failures, and a priority order is established for corrective repairs, addressing safety first and then traffic flow.
The actions are part of the Pla Endreça (Clean-up Plan), which aims to improve the quality of public space. Scheduled maintenance activities are planned for 453 signalized intersections during 2026, often incorporating fiber optics for remote management. The goal is to modernize 952 signalized intersections between 2025 and 2027, with improvements to electrical supply regulation, cabling, communication systems, and the implementation of traffic lights for visually impaired individuals.
By the end of 2024, Barcelona had already completed the transition to LED technology for all traffic lights, reducing daily energy consumption from 46,000 kWh to 10,000 kWh, despite an increase in signalized intersections. This technological shift has resulted in an 85% energy saving and a monthly economic saving of over 66,000 euros.
