Actress Aina Clotet has transitioned to directing with her first feature film, titled Viva, previously announced as Oh Nora!. The movie had its world premiere last May during the Cannes Critics' Week, a parallel section to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. This film, the only Catalan production at the festival, has been very well-received by audiences.
Clotet's participation in the festival proved doubly rewarding as she received the Louis Roederer Foundation Rising Star award from the Semaine de la Critique, recognizing her emerging talent for her performance in the film she also directed.
Viva, co-written by Aina Clotet and Valentina Viso, presents a drama with romantic undertones and dramedy elements. The story centers on Nora, a woman on the cusp of forty who faces life after overcoming breast cancer. The fear of death, and more importantly, the will to live, are the central themes of this work, blending humor with philosophical reflections on life and death from a certain age. The plot is also set in the near future, marked by drought, constant heat, and mental health concerns.
The film, starring Aina Clotet herself, features a cast including Marc Soler, Naby Dakhli, Willy Toledo, and Lloll Bertran, among others. Clotet explains that the project stems from a need to explore themes such as impermanence and relationship dependency, particularly in romantic love, with a protagonist who, after a difficult period, embraces life intensely.
The director cautions that such vitality can be blinding and burning, and that the sun should never be stared at directly. With a life-affirming and humorous perspective, Viva tells a story of grief and transformation, exploring romantic relationships and the protagonist's attraction to a younger man, featuring explicit scenes.
This is not Aina Clotet's first encounter with Cannes; in 2024, she attended with the series Això no és Suècia, which competed at Canneseries and earned her the Best Actress award. Viva is distributed by Caramel Films and will premiere in cinemas on June 19th. The film is produced by Ikiru Films and Funicular Films, with filming taking place in various locations across Barcelona, Badalona, Arenys de Munt, the Garraf region, and San Francisco (USA).
