The economist and key figure in Catalan banking and academia, Antoni Serra Ramoneda, died in Barcelona on February 5, 2026, at the age of 92, confirmed the UAB.

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) conveyed its condolences to the family and friends of Serra Ramoneda, highlighting his work as part of the institution's founding team. He served as secretary of the promoting commission and the first governing board, before becoming dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business.
Serra Ramoneda (Barcelona, 1933), who held a doctorate in economics from the Complutense University of Madrid, served as rector of the UAB between 1980 and 1985. His mandate was crucial, coinciding with the implementation of the University Reform Law (LRU), which allowed the UAB to be the first university in Spain to approve its statutes.

One of the most relevant economic figures in Catalonia, both for his academic work and his career in the business world.

In the financial sector, he was a director of the former Caixa de Pensions per a la Vellesa i d’Estalvis before the merger that created La Caixa. Subsequently, he chaired Caixa Catalunya for two decades, from 1984 to 2005, until he was succeeded by Narcís Serra.
His contribution to the country was recognized with the Creu de Sant Jordi award from the Generalitat. He also served as president of the Agency for the Quality of the University System in Catalonia and was a member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
