The Badalona City Council, led by Mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol, has announced a total ban on tourist apartments in the city by summer 2026 to align with neighboring Barcelona.

The local government plans to vote on the new regulations during the council meetings in April or May. This move follows a year-long moratorium on new licenses. Deputy Mayor Daniel Gracia emphasized that Badalona cannot remain an 'island' for tourist rentals while surrounding cities implement strict bans.

"Barcelona will ban tourist apartments in October 2028 and surrounding cities will too; Badalona cannot be an island."

Mayor Albiol admitted that while market intervention is not typically part of his political ideology, he is prioritizing local interests through what he calls Badalonisme. Local opposition parties, including the PSC and ERC, supported the shift towards housing regulation, despite the failure of a joint motion due to technical disagreements with the PP majority.
