The Barcelona City Council has approved the allocation of 13.7 million euros, collected from the tourist tax, to various municipal projects aimed at promoting and managing tourism in the city.

This decision, outlined in the agreements of the government commission on April 30, details the use of these funds for economic reactivation, promotion, and tourism management. Visitors staying in the city contribute to this collection through two channels: the Tourist Accommodation Tax, managed by the Generalitat (50% of which is transferred to the city council), and the municipal surcharge, which will gradually increase to eight euros per person per night by 2029.
Among the planned expenditures with these 13.7 million euros are significant allocations such as 2,317,500 euros for Christmas lighting, 1,500,000 euros for local commerce promotion, and 1,300,000 euros for the capital status of proximity commerce. These funds come from the portion of the tourist tax that the Generalitat transfers to the city council, as the municipal surcharge, promoted by ERC, has a different purpose, aimed at mitigating the impact of tourism in the most affected neighborhoods.

"Municipal projects, in the field of tourism, to be financed with funds from the Tourist Accommodation Tax, for the amount of 13,758,742.44 euros, with the aim of contributing to economic reactivation, promotion, and tourism management."

Other notable allocations include 1,522,129.32 euros for civic agents in High Tourist Influx Areas (EGA) such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell, 200,000 euros for the Eixample neighborhoods, and nearly 155,000 euros for visits to the former Model prison. Additionally, 850,000 euros are earmarked for Christmas tourism promotion campaigns, 663,135 euros for strategic economic promotion spaces like Beat Barcelona and Talent Arena 2026, and 700,000 euros for congress promotion. A sum of 50,000 euros will be dedicated to the celebration of "Geek Pride".
Since 2014, the tourist tax and municipal surcharge have generated over 315 million euros for municipal coffers. The municipal surcharge, implemented since 2021, has contributed 180.7 million euros until 2024, while the Generalitat's tax has contributed over 134.6 million euros.
