The Barcelona City Council approved a proposal this Friday to subsidize 50% of school meal costs for all students in the city starting in 2027.

The initiative, led by ERC, received support from Junts, PP, and Vox. The governing PSC party and Barcelona en Comú abstained from the vote. The measure aims to provide universal aid to all public and semi-private (concertada) schools for infants and primary education.

"From the pockets of tourists to the pockets of families to counteract the rising cost of living."

Elisenda Alamany estimated the cost at 20 million euros, proposing to use funds from the city's tourist tax surcharge. However, Economy Councilor Jordi Valls warned that the plan lacks financial progressivity and could eventually cost the city up to 81 million euros.
The session also saw a clash over housing policies. The opposition rejected a PSC proposal to create a study commission on real estate speculation, with parties demanding more immediate action against seasonal rentals and speculative purchases.
