Sants square experienced a concerning incident when a drilling machine damaged a gas pipe, leading to a deflagration and a fireball over 10 meters high that lasted for 12 hours. The event left eight people injured, two seriously.
The incident occurred last Wednesday, shortly before 3 PM, and required the intervention of the firefighters, who used obturators to seal the gas escape routes. The flame extinguished automatically once the flow was blocked.
The Deputy Mayor for Security, Albert Batlle, took the opportunity to "demand full accountability from the Administrations and companies responsible for these actions," even though the Generalitat, through Infraestructures.cat, leads the project with a budget of approximately 16 million euros.
Carles Vaccaro, head of the civil works area at Infraestructures.cat, stated that recent incidents, including the one on L9 in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, are mere coincidences in timing and urged "confidence that things will be done correctly."
Residents of the area expressed their concern regarding the height of the flame and the uncertainty during the hours the incident persisted.
