The Catalan capital hosted this Friday the first bilateral summit between Spain and a Latin American country, with the presence of government teams from both nations. The main objective of the meeting was to strengthen diplomatic ties and collaboration in a complex global context.
During the working day, up to ten cooperation agreements were sealed in diverse fields such as social economy, critical minerals, racial equality, information and communication technologies (ICT), climate change, and consular, cultural, and university cooperation. These memorandums aim to deepen the relationship between Spain and Brazil, considered one of the most consolidated democracies and a key economic power globally.
“"AI replaces human ethics."
The summit also served to address current issues such as joint criticism of social networks, disinformation, and the use of technology. The Spanish prime minister emphasized that technology is an instrument of power used by oligarchs for their own benefit, while the Brazilian president expressed concern about the replacement of human ethics by artificial intelligence.
The event included a reception with military honors for the Brazilian president and generated national headlines, such as an amendment to the agreement between the Popular Party and Vox for the investiture in Extremadura, and apologies on behalf of Spain for statements about the Madrid president. Furthermore, the door was opened to a meeting with a Venezuelan opposition figure, and the regularization of migrants was advocated. In the Catalan context, a commitment was made to work towards the transfer of IRPF, as promised by the Catalan Government.
The president of the Generalitat was present at the official reception at the Palau de Pedralbes as host and will meet again with the Brazilian president during a joint visit to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. These events are part of an intense agenda that will continue over the weekend with the Global Progressive Mobilisation and the IV Meeting in Defense of Democracy, with the participation of various international socialist leaders.
